Microsoft Hopes Signing EU Code Will Build Trust in AI

Microsoft signed the EU general-purpose AI (GPAI) code of practice to help build trust in the emerging technology, the company said Thursday.

Signing the code marks “an important step in our ongoing commitment to building AI systems that are trustworthy,” Microsoft Chief Privacy Officer Cari Benn posted on LinkedIn. “We’ve long supported the goals of the EU AI Act, and while it’s a complex piece of legislation, we believe that early alignment -- through initiatives like this Code -- can help build trust in and ensure that the benefits of AI are broadly shared.”

Google said Wednesday that it signed the code despite having misgivings about it potentially slowing AI development and deployment (see 2507300006). Rules for those providing GPAI models take effect Saturday. The European Commission published guidelines earlier in July clarifying the code (see 2507180001).
