Global DPAs Press for Reliable AI Governance

Meeting at the Global Privacy Assembly in Seoul last week, the privacy chiefs signed a declaration that outlines the many opportunities AI offers, along with its various risks, including concerns about data protection and privacy, bias, misinformation and AI-related hallucinations.
To ensure that AI systems comply with existing laws, they should incorporate data protection by design, robust data governance and risk management, the DPAs said, according to a translation. The statement also stressed the growing complexity of data processing in the context of AI development and use, highlighting the diversity of stakeholders involved and the need for regulations that adapt to technological advances,
DPAs acknowledged their key role in the development of data governance to address AI's challenges and committed to clarifying issues such as the legal bases for data processing in AI and promoting innovation while reducing legal uncertainties.
The DPAs that signed the statement were from Germany, Australia, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, Spain, Finland, France, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, South Korea, New Zealand, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Macao, Poland, the U.K. and Sweden.
