“With personal and financial details at stake, courts and regulators continue to scrutinize whether businesses are implementing ‘reasonable and adequate’ cybersecurity measures,” said Rattigan.

A Sept. 22 filing at the U.S. District Court of Western Washington (case 2:24-cv-00596) revealed that Green Diamond Resource Co. agreed to pay $695,000 to resolve a class action on a 2023 data breach. Plaintiffs claimed the company didn’t adequately protect 28,000 consumers’ personal information, including Social Security numbers, government ID numbers and financial and medical information.

Plaintiffs asked the court to approve the proposed settlement and said that Green Diamon doesn’t oppose the motion. “The Settlement provides a very favorable result for the Settlement Class,” which lets each class member claim up to $5,000 for “documented out-of-pocket losses that are fairly traceable to the Incident,” it said.
