ICO Cheers Meta's 'Consent or Pay' Advertising Model
Meta's decision to ask users for consent for their personal information to target them with ads via a "consent or pay" model won praise from the U.K. Information Commissioner's Office Friday.

"This moves Meta away from targeting users with ads as part of the standard terms and conditions for using its Facebook and Instagram services, which we've been clear is not in line with UK law," the watchdog said in a statement.
Users can choose between consenting to personalized ads or paying a monthly subscription for an ad-free service, the ICO noted.
During ICO's engagement with the platform, Meta significantly lowered the starting price at which users will be offered a subscription, allowing people in the U.K. to subscribe at half the price EU users pay, the regulator added.
