Gov. Newsom Signs Sequel to California AI Bill He Rejected in 2025

California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) signed frontier AI legislation by Sen. Scott Wiener (D), the governor’s office said Monday.

SB-53 requires transparency about safety and security protocols and provides whistleblower protection to employees at AI developers (see 2509090038). Acting on recommendations from a Newsom-requested report, SB-53 is a scaled-back version of similar legislation that the governor vetoed last year (see 2508150016).

“We can establish regulations to protect our communities while also ensuring that the growing AI industry continues to thrive,” said Newsom in his office's press release. “This legislation strikes that balance.”

In the same release, Wiener said that the Newsom administration’s “partnership helped this groundbreaking legislation promote innovation and establish guardrails for trust, fairness, and accountability in the most remarkable new technology in many years.”
