CNIL, Computer Science Institute Collaborate on Privacy and AI Work
French DPA CNIL and the French National Institute for Research in Computer Science and Automation (INRIA) agreed on a new collaboration on data protection, privacy and evaluation of algorithms and systems, they announced Wednesday.

The new agreement sets "ambitious goals aimed at anticipating the ethical and legal challenges" around the emergence of AI and the processing of large-scale data, while supporting French and European innovation, the organizations said.
Among other activities, they will run workshops and public conferences; supervise doctoral and post-doctoral researchers; and develop educational tools and training.
A key challenge the agencies face is how to safeguard citizens' rights in the age of AI, they said. CNIL, which guards citizens' personal data, has gradually been entrusted with additional missions, and the enactment of the EU AI Act has strengthened its role as a major authority responsible for ensuring the deployment of AI systems that respect people's rights.
At the same time, the agencies noted, INRIA is charged with boosting France's capacity to develop and manage research and innovation in the digital sector, and is, with other agencies, in charge of implementing the National Institute for the Evaluation and Security of AI.
