The law sets deadlines for cross-border procedures to ensure that complaints are handled "in a reasonable time," Parliament said. It also "introduces a simplified cooperation procedure for streamlining the rules when the scope of an investigation is clear," no objection is raised by other DPAs, and the lead DPA has handled similar cases before. In these instances, investigations are capped at 12 months.

Complainants will have a stronger right to be heard and more access to information, Parliament noted. EU governments can provide for greater access if they choose.

The vote greenlit the outcome of negotiations with the EU Council, which still needs to formally adopt the legislation, Parliament said. Once approved, it will take effect 20 days after its publication in the EU Official Journal and apply 15 months after that.
