Meta to Partially Automate Privacy Compliance After Layoffs

Meta is restructuring its compliance team and will maintain “high standards,” the company said Friday in response to reports that it’s laying off hundreds of employees and automating certain compliance tasks.

Chief Privacy Officer Michel Protti told the company’s risk organization about the layoffs Wednesday, according to reports, which the company acknowledged. Meta’s risk organization is responsible for ensuring compliance with agencies like the FTC, which settled with Facebook for $5 billion in 2019 over the company’s Cambridge Analytica data privacy scandal.

“Through our product risk and compliance team, we've built one of the most sophisticated compliance programs in the industry to help us evaluate our products and features,” the company said, noting the changes will impact routine tasks. “We routinely make organizational changes and are restructuring our team to reflect the maturity of our program and innovate faster while maintaining high compliance standards.”
