The EU's complex immigration and asylum systems increasingly rely on digital technologies and databases, making them even more complicated, the organization said. Personal data collected, stored or processed through those systems might be crucial for assessing an individual's claim for international protection, for a visa or to contest deportation.
Lawyers in the field need to understand the systems and technologies, and for that, they need to know about privacy and data protection rights and the policies, laws, practices and jurisprudence that shape them, Statewatch said.
The handbook provides case studies and an overview of key technologies and systems used at the EU and national level. It includes detailed explanations of key privacy and data protection principes, terms and concepts, and explains how data protection law can help people seek redress.
