Democratic States Sue Trump Over CFPB ‘Defunding’ Tactics

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau is legally required to process consumer complaints and share the data with states, a group of 22 Democratic state attorneys general argued Monday in a lawsuit seeking to block the Trump administration’s efforts to “defund” the agency.

New York AG Letitia James (D) led the coalition, which includes AGs in California, Colorado, Connecticut and Oregon. They filed the lawsuit with the U.S. District Court for Oregon.

“My office and attorneys general across the country rely on the CFPB for consumer complaints and other data to get justice for consumers,” said James. “The administration’s actions are a handout to those who drive up costs by cheating hardworking Americans, and I will keep fighting to ensure they follow the law and our Constitution.”
