HIPAA Privacy Rule Changes Take Effect Feb. 16

Health care providers should update their HIPAA-related Notice of Privacy Practices by Feb. 16 to comply with new rules related to substance use disorder records, Holland & Hart said in a post Tuesday (see 2512100062).

The firm issued a redlined version of the changes to the HIPAA Privacy Rule. In response to litigation, the rule was updated to strengthen patient consent, redisclosure and enforcement provisions. Violations are subject to civil penalties and enforcement action from the HHS Office for Civil Rights.
